Discovering "what's next" is one of the most challenging and exciting steps in every individual's life and career. The purpose of this workshop is to equip you with the career management skills and resources to determine "what's next" and to achieve your career and life goals. The workshop has been offered for more than a decade to alumni of the University of Virginia , and has been adapted by the workshop creators for Georgetown University.

Numerous self-assessment tools will be used to help you define your life themes and life dreams and turn them into career objectives. These assessment tools will primarily be discussed and analyzed during the first day of the workshop. The second day of the workshop will focus on the process of finding what's next by creating high-impact resumes and marketing materials and developing the skills and resources to access today's market.

•  Individuals interested in learning or refining career management skills so they can better coach others

*The program is open to Georgetown University undergraduate and graduate alumni, Georgetown Continuing Education students, and all other individuals seeking a career change.

•  To assist individuals in developing and converting their life themes into career clear career goals and objectives

•  To help individuals make powerful and satisfying career transitions

•  To help individuals generate their own personal marketing packages

•  To provide life-long learning for individuals

•  Identifying and refining your personal set of life themes using multiple personality and career assessments

•  Translating your life themes into practical career objectives

•  Creating a plan to achieve your career objectives

•  Generating effective marketing materials (e.g., resumes, cover letters, etc.)

•  Generating job leads and executing an effective search

Faculty

James G. Clawson is Professor of Business Administration at The Darden School. Clawson designed the Career Transitions workshop at the University of Virginia, which is has been offered 2-3 times annually to alumni of UVA graduate and undergraduate programs for the past 10 years. Clawson has also authored several widely published books on career development, including Self Assessment and Career Development, which is used as the foundation of numerous career development programs throughout the country . Clawson has consulted with a number of corporations and organizations on issues of organizational design, management development, career management, managing change, leadership development, and human resource management. Clawson has designed and lead Darden Executive Education programs; Power and Leadership, The Art of Managing Human Resources, Contemporary Management Issues for NAVAIR, Building the Learning Organization, as well as customized programs for several Darden clients. Clawson received his B.A. from Stanford University, his M.B.A. from Brigham Young University, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University Graduate School of Business.

 

Everette Fortner came to Darden in July 2003 as the new Director of Career Development. He serves as liaison between the employer community and the students. He leads all activities of the CDC including strategy development and implementation, corporate relationships and the portfolio of recruiting companies, career coaching of students, and direction and management of the teams. In his role as CDC director, Everette has been instrumental in shaping and teaching the Career Transitions course offer to all 300+ incoming Darden MBA students each year. Everette also works with both fulltime MBAs and students in MBA for Executives program. He serves as the liaison between the academic and employer communities and the Career Development Center. Everette is a Darden graduate from the Class of '87, and he previously worked for 17 years in marketing and general management with Kraft, Nabisco, FritoLay and Dun & Bradstreet, both in the U.S. and internationally. Everette lives in Charlottesville with his wife Sally and three teenage children.
